Spain

The country

Spain is a country of rich history and beautiful landscapes. It’s the fourth largest country in Europe, and just a bit larger than the state of California. The government of Spain is a constitutional monarchy, with 17 autonomous communities consisting of 50 provinces. While the official language is Spanish, there are also several other languages spoken within the country, which is a challenge for missionaries to truly be able to connect with the locals.

The people

There are over 46 million people in Spain. Spain’s main spiritual challenges are false spirituality and atheism (28%). People struggle to see their need for a relationship with Christ and give up superstitious traditions. Very few people in Spain truly understand the gospel. Only 1% of the country claims to be evangelical Christian. There is a growing population of Muslims (4%) that largely have not heard the gospel.

The church

When about 1% of the country claims to be evangelical, Bible-focused churches become a rarity in large cities. Numerous smaller, isolated villages remain without any gospel witness. Many evangelical churches in Spain are ethnic churches and have difficulty reaching Spaniards. While there are a handful of missionaries and evangelistic organizations in Spain, there is a deep need for more Christian workers and softening of hearts. Please join us in praying for the people in Spain and the furtherance of Christ’s work here.
